How to access/update extra fields in WP template files?

I want to use the extra fields I’ve created in the profile to be updated on other forms on my site. How do I hook the extra fields as an input field similar to below?

<input class=”text-input” name=”first-name” type=”text” id=”first-name” value=”<?php the_author_meta( ‘first_name’, $current_user->ID ); ?>” />

Hi Andrew, use get_user_meta to get user extra data.

<?php get_user_meta('meta_key', $current_user->ID, true) ?>

Thank you. I also found that <?php the_author_meta( meta_key, $current_user->ID ); ?> worked as well, since you’re storing in the meta table.

Can you tell me how to update the table with the new value?

I set my form as below
<form method=”post” class=”uProfile” id=”um_form_profile” enctype=”multipart/form-data”>

and used this button
<input type=”submit” name=”um_submit_button” value=”Update” id=”insert_user” class=”um_button” />

The form goes through the act of saving, but the new value is not saved.

Hi Andrew,

If you just hardcode some html input to the form, it won’t get updated. For security reason, we only count fields stored on plugins.
You can use html field to write your html and use ‘user_meta_after_user_update’ or ‘user_meta_after_user_register’ hooks to update into database.
