Hi I had to return here to let you know that I resolved my problem and was able to get emails working. There must have been a conflict with another user management plugin because when I deactivated New User Approval (whose interface, by the way, looks very much like the interface of this plugin) the email started working.

I LOVE this plugin. I am finding that it is making my job (creating a client area) so much easier. It does exactly what I need it to do, and I got a very pleasant surprise looking at the settings, I realized I can use the wp_admin profile page, customize it with a few clicks (to get rid of extra fields I don’t need or want) and then present it hidden behind a different url. This is exactly what I wanted to do.

I am not marking this topic as resolved because I don’t know if the other person has resolved their problem.

I have never an email although I requested them.
