Meta Field default value not being saved to profile on registration

On my website I have 2 textfield values that should be populated with default values when a user registers for my website.
– They are marked as required and read-only for non-admins

When he user registers, and views the user-meta profile page, the default values are there, but the values are not being saved to the user’s profile. (If you look at the user’s backend profile page, the fields are blank.)
I’ve tried the 1.1.3 pro version and the 1.1.4dev release.

I’ve tried both AJAX, and AJAX disabled and in neither case were the default values set
