custom field with format validation

How do configure a custom required field, that only accepts the following formats? (no spaces)
8 numbers + 1 letter – example: 12345678A
1 letter + 7 numbers + 1 letter – example: X1234567A

I have the following Regex:
(([X-Z]{1})([-]?)(\d{7})([-]?)([A-Z]{1}))|((\d{8})([-]?)([A-Z]{1}))

I don’t suppose there is a way to add this pattern to an already existing TEXT field (not custom field) in a registration form)?

I hope this problem is solved already as you can change the field type or can create a new custom field with the same meta-key.
