Conditional approval on registrations

I currently am using the admin approval option for registration. However, there are certain email domains that we would prefer to use the email confirmation option instead (basically anyone who has one of our company email addresses).

I was hoping that I could potentially use the user_meta_pre_user_register filter or user_meta_after_user_register action for this…maybe sending the registration approval with the data for those users. Before I go too far with this, can you let me know if this is even possible?
