    I had to do a manual update as described here: <http://user-meta.com/faq/update-failed/&gt;.

    I downloaded and unzipped the latest version. I disabled and then removed the old version. Then I uploaded the new version via ftp. I can see the file in the server, but it’s not appearing on my list of plugins in the WP dashboard.

    This is where it is on the server:

    /public_html/wp-content/plugins/user-meta-pro.1.1.4/user-meta/

    I figured it out. I had one directory too many. Deleted /public_html/wp-content/plugins/user-meta-pro.1.1.4/user-meta/ and reinstalled /public_html/wp-content/plugins/user-meta/ and it is now working.

    This would be a useful detail to add to the instructions for the benefit of those of us just muddling through WP.
